Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best organic feed for backyard chickens?

The best organic feed for backyard chickens depends on their age and purpose. Chicks need a higher-protein starter, laying hens need extra calcium for strong eggshells, and roosters or non-laying hens do best on a maintenance ration. Feather & Tail makes a USDA Organic, Non-GMO Project Verified feed for each stage.

Start chicks on Little Beaks organic chick starter, switch to Hen De La Crème organic layer pellets at the first egg, and use Flock & Awe maintenance pellets for roosters and hens outside laying season. Not sure which fits? The Feed Finder can match you in a few questions.

What makes Feather & Tail organic animal feed different from conventional feed?

Every Feather & Tail feed is certified USDA Organic and Non-GMO Project Verified, and each product page lists the full ingredient panel and guaranteed analysis, so you can check exactly what’s in the bag. Most formulas also include probiotics, and many add botanicals such as oregano and cinnamon oil, or kelp.

All feeds are made by Kreamer Feed, a family-owned Pennsylvania mill operating since 1947. Browse all Feather & Tail organic feeds to compare ingredients and nutrition by product.

How do I choose the right organic feed for my chickens, rabbits, goats, or mini pigs?

Start with the species, then match the life stage. Feather & Tail makes complete organic feeds for chickens at three stages (chicks, laying hens, and non-laying adults), plus dedicated formulas for rabbits, goats, and adult mini pigs. Each product page includes feeding directions by age or condition, and the Feed Finder can suggest a match in a few questions.

What is the difference between organic and non-GMO animal feed?

Non-GMO means a feed’s ingredients aren’t genetically modified. USDA Organic goes further: it also excludes GMOs, but adds standards for how ingredients are grown and handled, such as limits on synthetic pesticides and fertilizers. Every Feather & Tail feed is both USDA Organic certified and Non-GMO Project Verified, so you don’t have to choose between the two.

You’ll find both certifications listed on every Feather & Tail product page.

What is the best organic chicken feed for laying hens?

Laying hens need more calcium than other birds to form strong eggshells, so a dedicated layer feed is the best fit. Feather & Tail Hen De La Crème is a complete organic layer pellet with 17% protein, 3.75–4.25% calcium, and added probiotics. Start feeding it when your hens lay their first egg.

Offer Hen De La Crème organic layer pellets free-choice at about ¼ lb per bird per day. You can also provide oyster shell or coarse limestone alongside it in a separate feeder.

Where is Feather & Tail organic animal feed made?

Feather & Tail feeds are made in the USA by Kreamer Feed, a family-owned mill in Kreamer, Pennsylvania, operating since 1947. Kreamer Feed is also the producer of Nature’s Best Organic Feeds®, and Feather & Tail is its newer line for backyard keepers and homesteaders.

What should I feed chickens at different stages of growth?

Feed chicks a high-protein starter until they begin laying, then switch to a calcium-rich layer feed at the first egg. Roosters and hens outside laying season can move to a maintenance ration. Meat birds (broilers) stay on starter for life. Treats like scratch grains should stay a small part of the diet.

Can chickens, ducks, and other poultry eat the same feed?

Adult poultry of different species can often share a maintenance feed, but growing birds and laying hens need their own. Flock & Awe is labeled as a complete ration for roosters, non-laying hens, and adult turkeys, ducks, geese, quail, pheasants, and peafowl. It isn’t intended for chicks or active layers.

Give laying hens calcium-rich organic layer pellets, give chicks organic chick starter, and use Flock & Awe all-poultry maintenance pellets for everyone else.

What should I look for when buying organic feed for rabbits, goats, and mini pigs?

Choose a feed formulated for the species, then check protein, fiber, and feeding directions for your animal’s life stage. Rabbits need high fiber and constant hay, goats need roughage alongside pellets, and mini pigs need portions measured to body weight. Feather & Tail makes a USDA Organic, Non-GMO Project Verified formula for each.
